Why am I receiving a lot of unwanted email?

How to tell whether the filter is missing the mail entirely or delivering it as suspect, and what to do in each case.

The answer depends on what the filter made of the messages, and you find that out from the headers. A message the filter suspected carries its judgement there. One it passed as clean carries nothing.

See how to locate your email headers and understanding email headers, then understanding why an email is marked as spam for what the scores mean.

The mail is marked as suspect

Your domain is set to deliver suspect mail rather than hold it, so the filter is doing what it was told. The messages arrive tagged, and it is left to you to deal with them.

You have two ways forward. Create a rule in your mail program that files tagged messages into Junk, which keeps them out of your way without losing them. See rules for spam filtering in Microsoft Outlook.

Or ask your email administrator to change the setting for the domain, so suspect mail is held or rejected instead. See choosing your spam filtering settings.

The mail is not marked at all

The filter judged these messages clean, so this is a filtering problem rather than a settings one. See when spam reaches your inbox, which covers both a new campaign the filter has yet to learn and a single sender who keeps getting through.

Marking the messages yourself helps, because the filter learns from it. See training the spam filter.
